Pierre Castel: Mayor of Quillan
To say that Pierre Castel is a man with a plan is understating the obvious. Those plans are all centered on making Quillan thrive for years to come. We met at the PMU for coffee on a sunny morning and visited about his history and vision of the future.
Memorial Ceremony for Paul Swank and the Maquis Killed in Operation Peg
Some experiences are humbling. Others are exhilarating. A few are truly fulfilling. Yesterday Jules and I participated in one that brought all emotions into focus.
Expats Who Serve Their Adopted Village: Ineka van Mackelenbergh
One previous blog featured an example of a woman whose contribution to her home village has officially ended, but unofficially continues as she works to keep communication channels open between those whose language is French and her fellow expats. This story has similar elements, but many variations.
The Haute Valley: The Story of Lieutenant Paul Swank
There are too many elements of life in the area that are constant reminders that cultures here existed long before the USA was born. They are important and should be included. Others over the years have done the research; I will share with you some of the neat stuff they have uncovered.
Expats Who Serve Their Adopted Village: Sue Ingram
I have made reference to the villages accepting us English speaking residents and offering opportunities for social interaction. The fish and chips and bbq nights at the PMU and the quiz night at the Terminus are great examples. However, one of the best examples is that in both Quillan and Campagna, expat women serve as representatives on the village council.
People Who Make the Aude Valley Special: Richard and Myriam of Chez Richard Boucherie
Julie and I first became customers of Chez Richard several years ago. As the seasons passed, we have become friends. They greet each patron with smiles and kind words, and are ready with suggestions when a customer is uncertain.
Reflections: What I Miss about the U.S. & What I Don’t
Ju and I have lived in Quillan for almost three years now. Before I go on, we love it here; but at times I reflect on a few things that we experienced in the States that cannot be duplicated in France.
Fish and Chips: Friday Night in Quillan
Every other Friday evening from March through October the “Fish and Chips” truck pulls to a stop on the promenade in Quillan. It’s one of several destinations around the Haute Valley rotating on a two week schedule.
Play it Again, Sam: Overnight Trip to Roses, Spain
Spain is only a little over an hour by car from the Haute Valley. The first half hour of the drive is spent negotiating twisting D117 through magnificent gorges along the Aude. It’s stunning scenery if you are riding, but driving requires “every man on deck” mentality to avoid ending up as a hood ornament for a logging lorry.
Rene Hunnekink: The Gouda Guy
Every Saturday in Quillan and every Sunday in Esperaza hungry patrons filter to the stand behind which Rene Hunnekink sells the products he grew up with in Holland.
